ULLAMBANA FESTIVAL
In Vietnamese
tradition, the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the lunar
calendar is known as Ancestor Day, during which living descendants pay
homage to both their living and deceased ancestors, and the deceased are
believed to return home to visit the living. With ancestor
worship, the filial piety of descendants extends to their ancestors
even after they have passed away. Also on this day, the realms of Heaven and Hell and the realm of the
living are open, and Buddhists would perform rituals to transmute and absolve
the sufferings of all the deceased, the hungry ghosts.
To Mahayana Buddhists, the
seventh lunar month is a month of joy. This is because the fifteenth day of
this month is often known as the day of rejoicing for monks after the summer
retreat.
